Winter 2002 Newsletter

Timothy Shriver, President of Special Olympics, writes that the current movie “I Am Sam” is not about Sam Dawson, “a retarded man with autism, and a mental age of 7." Instead, “I Am Sam” is about you. In Shriver’s recent Washington Post article he writes,

"It's understandable that some viewers might be uncomfortable. It's understandable because people with mental challenges are the most neglected and misunderstood people in the world. They are still institutionalized, denied medical care, denied education and denied respect. They are usually lonely, mostly unemployed, sometimes ridiculed and regularly left out. A mother of a special child once told me that her greatest fear was that no one would come to her son's birthday party. She was willing to fight for her son, but she couldn't fight the fear that no one cared.

All of that may be understandable, but it's wrong. It's wrong because there are 170 million people in the world with mental retardation who, despite obvious challenges, have gifts that can and should be seen, heard and understood. There are more than 6 million people with mental disabilities in the United States alone, and for them, "mental age" is a narrow assessment of their humanity, and 'disability' is a one-dimensional label for their capabilities."

Loneliness is the greatest disability that people in our country face, says David Pitonyak of the Commonwealth Coalition for Community. In Hanover County, there are children and adults with disabilities who experience profound loneliness as a result of isolation.
Daily we hear from or hear about,

  • adults at home all day due to waiting lists for programs,

  • children who don’t have friends in their neighborhood.

Hanover Arc works to reduce isolation and loneliness through the Adult Recreation Program, funds for camperships, scholarships and even adaptive equipment, which increases a person’s ability to be in touch with others. Hanover Arc salutes our donors in this newsletter who make it possible to provide these services.

Many in Hanover County are generously stepping up and volunteering their gifts to make life better for individuals with disabilities. Hanover Arc is excited to annouce that:

Pamela B. Cathcart’s newest book, The Memory Keep will provide Scholarship funds in memory of Elvis G. Jimenez.

The First Annual Country Music Show benefiting Hanover Arc
is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, 2002 at 3:00 PM.

The Friends of Hanover Gala will donate funds to Hanover Arc in December 2002 for adaptive equipment.

Country Music Show Benefit
Sunday, April 14, 2002 3:00 PM Ashland Theater

When they aren't doing something with their grandchildren, raising funds for a charity or at church, you will probably find Bob and Jackie Thornton tapping their feet at a country music show. They travel many miles from their home in Montpelier to hear their favorite singers and groups. The Thorntons out of a desire to help children with disabilities, asked Hanover Arc if they could put on a country music show to benefit Hanover Arc's Summer Educational Scholarship and Campership Funds. Bob, also a golfer, has played in the two Hanover Arc golf tournaments. He said that he had a great time at the tournaments but he wanted to do something more to help. Sweeter words could not have been heard by Hanover Arc, as raising funds is a constant ongoing challenge.

Bob and Jackie are well known fans to the musicians on stage. With a similar desire to make good things happen for others, the Austin Armadillos are joining with Bob and Jackie to make this show possible. Many of their friends are pitching in to put on the First Annual Country Music Show.

Our thanks to Bob, Jackie, the Austin Armadillos and their friends.

You may call Hanover Arc 798-2400 to reserve your ticket. Tell your friends and family. Tickets are $10.00. Mark April 14 on your calendar and support a great cause for great kids.

Dennis Dohnal Outstanding Board Member

The end of 2001 brought the completion of The Honorable Dennis Dohnal's six years on the Board of Directors for Hanover Arc. (Six consecutive years is the maximum one may serve.) "Dennny" was a popular and sought after Hanover Arc speaker for the United Way Services Campaign speeches at businesses. In one campaign season alone, he traveled and spoke at 21 different businesses. He often took the early bird speeches and would be present for the 7:30 AM meetings. That was just one of the many ways in which Denny served on the Board. We applaud and thank Denny for his many contributions.

Request Assistance In Advance From Hanover County Department of Parks and Recreation (to participate in offerings listed in 30 page brochure).

"THAT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE", said the parent.
"YES, IT IS TRUE!", said the staff.

It is true that children and adults with disabilities may request assistance (in advance) from the staff of the Hanover County Department of Parks and Recreation so that they can participate in offerings listed in the Parks & Recreation 30 page brochure. A parent/caregiver may call in advance, and talk with Dana Pritchett, Therapeutic Recreation Specialist about the supports that their family member needs to participate in an activity. Dana Pritchett will determine with the child/adult and family/caregiver what support is needed and seek a qualified staff person to assist the individual. The staff person will meet your family member at the activity site and be ready to help them enjoy!

Here it is step by step:

  1. Believe!

  2. Look in the Discover Your Parks Winter/Spring 2002 bulletin with your family member and pick the course offerings that are of interest.

  3. Think about what specific assistance your family member would need to participate in the activity. (mobility, communication, supervision, instruction, etc.)

  4. Call Dana Pritchett at 779-7948 and tell her what your family member wants to enroll in and tell her the specific assistance needed.

YOU MUST CALL AT LEAST 15 DAYS PRIOR TO THE SCHEDULED ACTIVITY.

Is anything stopping you now?
